Funds will support children’s charities across the country;

tournament once again among the largest fundraising PGA TOUR events

SAN ANTONIO, April 17, 2012 – The Valero Texas Open and Benefit for Children Golf Classic together raised $9 million for children’s charities – matching the record total set by last year’s tournament events – organizers announced during a special event for local Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts at the headquarters of tournament title sponsor Valero Energy Corporation.

The fundraising total is likely to secure the Valero Texas Open’s spot among the top fundraising events on the PGA TOUR.

Funds are raised through sponsorships sold during the Valero Texas Open – which takes place Thursday through Sunday this week – and the Valero Benefit for Children Golf Classic – a golf tournament in which a record 2,300 participants will play on Monday, April 23 at 11 of San Antonio’s premier golf courses. Employees in locations where Valero has operations choose worthy children’s charities to receive the funds. Though its history, the Texas Open has raised $76 million for charities – $71.5 million of that since 2002, when Valero became the tournament’s title sponsor.

“We always have a lot of fun during tournament week, and we’re going to get to see some great golf this weekend, but for us, raising money for children’s charities is what the Valero Texas Open is all about,” said Valero Senior Vice President of Human Resources Mike Crownover, who is heading up Valero’s efforts in this year’s tournament. “We couldn’t raise these funds without the generosity of our sponsors and business partners, and we couldn’t put the tournament on at all without the efforts of the thousands of volunteers who are out every day, making sure everything goes smoothly.”

Golf San Antonio, which organizes the Valero Texas Open, raises charitable dollars through its pro-am golf tournaments, the Birdies for Charity program in which nonprofit organizations solicit pledges for every birdie made during tournament week, and the Chip In for Schools program, which allows schools to sell discounted tournament tickets and keep all the proceeds.

“We can’t think of a better way to celebrate the Valero Texas Open’s 90th birthday than to give the gift of hope to children in San Antonio and other communities where Valero does business,” said Dean Lammert, Volunteer Chairman of Golf San Antonio. “Such a gift is possible because of the generous heart of Valero, its many business partners, and the fine organizations in San Antonio that support the tournament.”

This year’s tournament, which runs Thursday, April 19 through Sunday, April 22 at the TPC San Antonio AT&T Oaks Course, provides its players a chance to earn FedEx-Cup points. Tickets can be purchased through schools participating in the Chip In for Schools program (call 210-345-3818), or by going online at www.golfsanantonio.org. Those purchasing tickets directly from Golf San Antonio can select a participating school to receive the funds. Additionally, tickets can be purchased at area Valero Corner Stores or at the tournament gate. Children 12 and under and spectators with a valid military ID will receive free admission.

About the Valero Texas Open:

The Valero Texas Open is the 5th oldest tournament in golf world-wide, the 3rd oldest on the PGA TOUR and the longest held in the same city; making San Antonio the oldest host city on TOUR. Eight different golf courses in San Antonio have hosted the Texas Open; including Ft. Sam Houston, which is the only military base golf course host a PGA TOUR event. During its history, the Texas Open has had four title sponsors: HEB (1990-1993); USAA Real Estate Company (1995-1997), Westin Hotels & Resorts (1998-2000); and its current and longest running partner, Valero Energy Corporation, which started its sponsorship in 2002 and recently extended it to 2018.

Its list of champions includes some of the greatest names in golf: Walter Hagen, Byron Nelson, Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Jack Burke Jr., Arnold Palmer, Chi Chi Rodriguez, Ben Crenshaw, Hale Irwin, Lee Trevino, Corey Pavin, Mark O’Meara, Nick Price, Justin Leonard, Zach Johnson and Adam Scott, to name a few.

Valero Extends Sponsorship of Valero Texas Open through 2018
Six-year deal includes a $1.2 million donation to The First Tee of San Antonio

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FL and SAN ANTONIO, TX – The PGA TOUR and Valero Energy Corporation announced today a six-year extension of Valero’s sponsorship commitment to the Valero Texas Open in San Antonio. The new deal takes effect in 2013 and runs through 2018.

The announcement comes as the tournament prepares to celebrate its 90th year in San Antonio, making it one of the longest-running tournaments on the PGA TOUR and the longest held in the same city, dating back to 1922. The Valero Texas Open also has become a leader in charitable donations on the PGA TOUR. Last year’s Valero Texas Open generated a TOUR-record $9 million for charity, bringing the tournament’s all-time contributions to $67 million, $62.5 million of which has come since Valero became title sponsor in 2002. It has led PGA TOUR tournaments in charitable giving in five of the past six years.

“Valero is proud to continue its title sponsorship of the Valero Texas Open and to continue its association with the PGA TOUR,” said Mike Crownover, Valero’s Senior Vice President of Human Resources and the Valero executive overseeing the company’s activities at this year’s tournament. “The extended sponsorship shows Valero’s commitment to our hometown of San Antonio and to the deserving charities that benefit from the millions of dollars raised each year.”

“The Valero Texas Open has been an integral part of the San Antonio community and the PGA TOUR for 90 years,” said PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem. “Not only does it celebrate a rich history as a premier sporting event in San Antonio, it also has had a significant impact on thousands of lives through a remarkable charitable record, particularly since Valero became involved as title sponsor.

Valero has been a terrific partner of the tournament and the PGA TOUR, and I am delighted that with today’s announcement this legacy will continue in San Antonio for the foreseeable future.”

As part of the extension, Valero, in partnership with Golf San Antonio, will continue its support of The First Tee of San Antonio by donating $1.2 million over the term of the deal to provide a base of support upon which the San Antonio community can build. The chapter is located at historic Brackenridge Park, site of the Valero Texas Open’s original home course.

“This is a perfect example of how PGA TOUR tournaments and their sponsors can a have significant impact on a community,” said Joe Louis Barrow, Jr., chief executive of The First Tee. “Valero’s commitment to The First Tee of San Antonio will allow the chapter to further its reach and impact in the community, thus making a difference for thousands of young people who will be better prepared for life beyond the golf course.”

Since it began programming in 2002, The First Tee of San Antonio has reached almost 25,000 young people with educational-based programs that build character using golf as the platform. In addition, The First Tee National School Program is currently in 38 area elementary schools, introducing more than 19,000 students each year to golf and core values during physical education classes.

While the Valero Texas Open has a long history in San Antonio, it has undergone two significant changes in the past several years. Long contested as a fall tournament, the Valero Texas Open moved to the spring in 2009 to become part of the FedExCup competition. Then, in 2010, it moved to the AT&T Oaks Course at the newly opened TPC San Antonio, adjacent to the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa. The course was designed by Greg Norman with Sergio Garcia serving as player consultant. Brendan Steele won last year’s Valero Texas Open, one of seven rookies to win on the PGA TOUR in 2011.
